Types of Agni

BALANCED DIGESTION – Sama Agni

Doesn’t produce toxic waste, this agni preserves health.

FIERY DIGESTION – Tikshna Agni

Typical of Pitta dosha, food is metabolised so quickly that when tikshna agni lacks food, agni will begin to digest the body’s tissues. If the person eats enough to suit this intense fire, there will be no problems, but if the input is deficient, body weight will be low.

EARTHY FIRE – Mand Agni

This is a weak digestive fire, common in Kapha dosha types or when Kapha is imbalanced. As digestion is slow, it is common for the person to feel heavy and sleepy after eating and also tends to get full up after eating small quantities. Earthy fire types gain weight easily and find it hard to lose that weight. When the volume of food is greater than agni can transform, the excess undigested food will be stored in the body increasing not only body weight but also raising the level of toxicity.

AIRY DIGESTION – Vishama Agni

Unstable, poor digestion that goes from a strong appetite to the loss of it, typical of Vata dosha. It results in the difficulty in producing tissues, low body weight and the production of toxins.
